Ámaxa for IB CAS Projects: How We Align

Scarlette Jiminez

Our five-step program has much in common with the seven CAS objectives as part of the IB curriculum.
This makes our program an excellent way for IB students to maximize the impact of their service
involvement! In this article, we have outlined how our mission aligns with the various CAS
objectives.

Strength & Growth and Global Engagement

What makes our program unique is that we believe that our students need to research and understand
the context of their selected problems. This allows them to engage with and understand global
contexts and challenge their perspectives, aiming for personal growth.

After selecting one of our 13 real problems , our
students meet individually with the director of the nonprofit that has selected this problem.

As part of Step Two, students connect with other experts to inquire more about their selected
problems. Some of our current IB students helping resettled Afghan refugees met via Zoom
with Michael Posner, the former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human
Rights, and Labor, to discuss their issue.

Challenge & Skills

Through our five-step process, all ámaxa students learn foundational soft
skills, like drafting an email and networking. They also learn hard skills, such as how to plan a
fundraiser. Check out what other skills are available for our students to learn in our Skills
Base
!

For example, we launched a specialized skill program, “Become an
Instagram Expert,” for students who want to learn about social media
management. One of our current students put their new skills to work and launched a vibrant
Instagram page for one of our partner nonprofits. Here's what she had to say about our program:

"Working with the ámaxa student impact program has been an experience I'll never forget. It's not every day I come across a program that treats students like global leaders."

Initiative & Planning and Working with Others

Students improve their initiative and planning skills in Step Four of our program, which involves
making a step-by-step plan to solve the problem. We publish this Action Blueprint on our online
platform for future students to learn from.

Moreover, as our students work on a solution to their problems, they collaborate with other
students and experts from around the world. They develop excellent communication skills as they
learn to work collaboratively both remotely and in-person.

Showing Perseverance & Recognize Ethics

During our program, students build a strong work ethic as they commit to meeting once a week with
their teams and mentors for 4 - 6 months. They complete all relevant tasks during the week to
maintain progress on their projects.

Every step of our program also inspires a recognition of ethics. We aim to help
students realize the power they have to make an impact in the lives of others, while also
understanding the responsibility that comes with that. They begin to gain an awareness about the
world and how their actions affect others, as well as the most ethical way of helping people around
the world.

Meeting CAS requirements does not have to be tedious; it can be a fulfilling and meaningful activity
that creates a tangible impact. We help this come true throughout Student Impact Program!
